Bremen, November 23, 2019. Pusser’s, often described by experts and connoisseurs as the “single malt” of rum, is now available in Germany in three qualities: Pusser’s Blue Label, Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof and, from 2019, the strictly limited Pusser’s 15 years in completely new equipment.

The signature drink Pusser’s Painkiller® also marks the return of an absolute Tiki cocktail classic to German bars. The famous drink was invented in the British Virgin Islands by a bartender named Daphne Henderson at the Soggy Dollar Bar and is the official cocktail of the British Virgin Islands. In true style, this cocktail is served in the original Pusser’s cup.

Pusser’s British Navy Rum is at home in well-stocked specialty stores as well as in the best cocktail bars in Germany. Sources of supply and the original Pusser’s Painkiller® cups can be requested at pussers@bsc-bremen.de.

For over 300 years, the legendary Royal Navy Rum was reserved only for the sailors of the British Navy as a daily ration. These rations, also known as “tots,” were handed out by the purser, who was called pusser in slang by the sailors. The pusser didn’t have an easy job on board because he was often suspected of diluting the rum with water. To prove otherwise, he mixed a few grains of gunpowder into the rum and tried to ignite it. If the rum ignited, it was considered “at proof”, that is, unadulterated. If not, the pusser found himself at the bottom of the sea faster than he would have liked.

Today, Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum, at a strong 54.5% vol. stands for this original quality in its most characterful and pure form.

The popular tradition of daily tots ended on July 31, 1970, now known as Black Tot Day. On this day, the British Navy distributed its last ration of rum. The legendary Pusser’s Rum was in danger of being forgotten.

However, in 1979 Charles Tobias obtained the rights from the British Navy and with Pusser’s the original Navy Rum was registered as a trademark and thus also made available to the public for the first time. Still to this day, a portion of the proceeds are donated to British Naval charities.

The ingredients of Pusser’s Rum come from stills in Guyana. The distillates from the Port Mourant – Double Wooden Pot Still from 1732 have a special share in the unique taste of the rum. The “Greenhart” staves of this historic still have absorbed aromatics for decades and offer a flavor character that cannot be matched by modern stills.

Today, Pusser’s British Navy Rum enjoys immense popularity in bars around the world, serving as an irreplaceable ingredient in many rum-based cocktails or as a characterful neat treat.
