Fred Douglas Laing

Fred Douglas Laing (FDL) founded Douglas Laing & Co. in 1948. He always had a fondness for Scotch whisky, and so his dreams came true when he founded the company in 1948, with little more than a few casks of blended Scotch whisky, a recently acquired brand name – King of Scots – and a relentless determination to succeed. Typical of many of these old characters in our Scotch industry, FDL was “oddball”, personable and business savvy.

To secure growing sales, he signed bottling contracts with many of Scotland’s most famous and prestigious distilleries, many of which still exist today, securing the future of the company’s stock. He was self-taught in blending, and through his successes and (occasional) failures, he learned the art of whisky blending.
