The rum smuggling during Prohibition

At the beginning of Prohibition, boats could legally store rum as long as they were 3 nautical miles off the U.S. coast. In popular smuggling areas, several boats were usually seen anchored along the so-called “Rum Line”.

Smugglers often used speedboats as tenders, equipped with surplus World War I aircraft engines to ensure they could outrun the Coast Guard when they brought the liquor ashore.

After being captured in 1924 with a large quantity of rum on board, the Kirk and Sweeney was renamed the Chase and used as a Coast Guard training ship until she was scrapped in the 1950s.

The Kirk and Sweeney

The Kirk and Sweeney was a notorious smuggling ship that smuggled the finest rum from the Caribbean to northeastern America via a secret sea route during Prohibition in the early 20th century. On the onion-shaped bottle you can see an old sea chart, which shows the secret route of the schooner.

After being seized and decommissioned off the coast of New York in 1924 with a large quantity of rum on board, the Kirk and Sweeney was renamed the Chase and used as a Coast Guard training ship until it was finally scrapped in the 1950s.

However, rum production is fortunately still active today.

Kirk and Sweeney Reserva

Handcrafted in the Dominican Republic, this rum meets the very strict regulations for the designation “Dominican Rum”. The process begins with hand-harvested, high-quality sugar cane processed for fermentation and distillation. The rum is then aged in various American and French oak barrels, with the distiller performing various steps of bottling, blending and re-bottling over the years. The final blend consists of a selection of differently aged rums between 3 and 14 years, carefully selected by hand.
