The founders of Gray Whale Gin believe that a lovingly handcrafted spirit brings people together to have a good time, and while you’re together, you can also do something good for the world. They came up with this simple idea during a camping trip to Big Sur – overwhelmed by the breathtaking beauty of California and happy to be on this rocky coast, surrounded by ancient trees and the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. As they looked out over the turquoise sea beyond McWay Falls, they saw a gray whale and its calf on their own journey north. It’s a journey gray whales have been making for more than 30 million years, long before we got on two legs. Now we’re celebrating her 12,000-mile journey with a wonderful gin made from botanicals gathered along this majestic creature’s migratory route – from limes in Temecula to kelp in Mendocino and a few stops in between.

The founders

Marsh and Jan Mokhtari met 20 years ago in a Chicago bar. It sounds mundane, but hey, they make gin, so suddenly it sounds profound. Marsh hosts food and adventure shows on the Food Network, National Geographic and the Travel Channel. Jan is an award-winning creative director and filmmaker who develops campaigns and content for some of the biggest brands in the world. In 2016, they combined their superpowers and founded Golden State Distillery. A distillery that celebrates California and supports the Golden State by protecting nature and wildlife.

Gray Whale Gin is perfected with sustainably sourced or wild-collected ingredients. The journey begins with the aroma of citrus, followed by juniper and a subtle hint of cool coastal fir. Continuing along the coast, fresh mint and the umami flavors of kombu seaweed are rounded out by a nice, creamy almond finish.

WHALE FLOWER

Ingredients
  • 2 parts Gray Whale Gin
  • 1 1/2 parts elderflower liqueur
  • 2 parts grapefruit juice
  • Soda water
  • Grapefruit wedge and lavender branch
Preparation

Combine Gray Whale gin, elderflower liqueur and grapefruit juice in a shaker with ice and shake. Strain over fresh ice into a glass and top with soda water. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a sprig of lavender.

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 parts Gray Whale gin
  • 3/4 part Aperol
  • 1/2 part fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 part simple syrup
  • 2 parts grapefruit kombucha
  • Grapefruit peel
Preparation

Add all ingredients (excluding kombucha) to a cocktail shaker and shake for 3-4 seconds. Pour cocktail over ice into a Collins glass, top with grapefruit kombucha and garnish with a grapefruit peel.
